Simple Ways To Relieve The Pain Of Arthritis
If you’re familiar with the pain of arthritis, no one has to tell you how powerful it can be. You have probably struggled a lot to find some sort of relief from that pain. This disease has yet to have a formal cure, but luckily, there are some tips that can help you achieve some much needed arthritis pain relief.
Moist heat is one of best forms of arthritis pain relief that works quickly. You can either buy a heating pad or a hot pack at the store, or you can make your own heating pad at home. A homemade pack would mean you first need to dampen a towel with some warm water. You can either heat the towel in a 300 degree F oven for 5-10 minutes, or heat it in the microwave between 10-60 seconds depending on the microwave wattage. To keep from burning yourself you can do a temperature test of your towel on your inner forearm - the same procedure used to test a baby’s bottle.
Another excellent option for the relief of arthritis pain is to slide into a bath. Baths, referred to as hydrotherapy, are used by many physical therapists for pain relief. Hydrotherapy can be performed at home in a bathtub or a hot tub. If you have a bathtub with the water jets that will be close to the kinds of professional warm water massages. If you don’t have an oversized whirlpool tub, then a 15-20 minute dip in a warm bath will do the trick. In a hot bath like this your body responds to the warmth of the water, which lets your muscles carry the bulk of your weight, especially in your knees and hips, and allows you to fully relax.
If you’re averse to taking baths, you can also do hydrotherapy in the shower. If you have one of those shower massagers, it can work just as well. When you’re using a massager in the shower, first set the temperature to your desired level, and then select the pulse rate and speed that are most effective for you. Once you have the temperature at your preferred settings, be sure to keep the water massager at least 4-6 inches from the joint that is hurting.
Ice is another treatment for arthritis that works well for relieving the pain of aching joints. Rather than using actual ice in a pack try a gel-filled cold pack, which will give the same results and is less frigid. Inexpensive and available in a range of shapes and sizes, gel-filled cold packs can be used on areas that are difficult to reach. Keeping a few in the freezer is recommended so that you can have pain relief at your fingertips whenever you need it.
